Unit: Emergency
Duty Station: Gaza
Closing date: 4 July 2025
Initial Contract duration: 6 months
Purpose of the Position:
WHO is seeking to hire a nutrition information field officer to support strengthening nutrition data management and surveillance, ensuring timely, reliable, and actionable information to guide programmatic decisions and improve outcomes for vulnerable populations.
Objectives of the Program and the immediate Strategic Objective:
Maintain the provision of services for management of severe acute malnutrition through collaborating with Health and Nutrition Cluster partners to:
- Scale up MUAC screening and weight-for-height Z-score (WHZ) measurements for children aged 0-59 months presenting at health facilities, enabling timely case referral to appropriate services.
- Expand stabilization centres across Gaza’s five governorates to provide inpatient care for 1200-1800 children with SAM with medical complications.
- Strengthen counselling and support for Infant and Young Child Feeding in Emergencies (IYCF-E) at health facilities to improve breastfeeding practices and distribute relevant materials and guidelines.
- Promote the timely sharing of screening data and key information to inform the response and monitor critical indicators.
Organizational context:
Malnutrition remains a critical public health challenge in the Gaza Strip, exacerbated by protracted conflict, restricted access to essential resources, and widespread economic instability. The situation has significantly deteriorated following the recent escalation of hostilities, with acute malnutrition among children aged 6–59 months increasing tenfold and the Global Acute Malnutrition (GAM) rate reaching approximately 6.4%, according to the Nutrition Cluster dashboard. On 17 October 2024, the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) analysis reported that 86% of Gaza's population is facing high levels of acute food insecurity—classified as IPC Phase 3 (Crisis) or above—with more than 133,000 individuals in IPC Phase 5 (Catastrophe). It is estimated that between September 2024 and April 2025, around 60,000 children under five will suffer from acute malnutrition, including 12,000 with severe acute malnutrition (SAM). On 8 November 2024, the IPC system issued a formal alert highlighting a strong likelihood of imminent famine in parts of northern Gaza and called for immediate, coordinated action to prevent further deterioration. In response, WHO, as the lead agency for the Health Information System (HIS), is undertaking several initiatives to improve access to timely and accurate nutrition and health data from implementing partners, with a focus on children under five and pregnant women. Reliable nutrition data and strong surveillance systems are essential to monitor trends, guide programmatic decisions, inform policy and advocacy, and ensure that resources are targeted effectively. To support these efforts, WHO seeks to recruit a Nutrition Information Officer who will play a key role in strengthening data management and nutrition surveillance systems, ensuring timely, actionable information to improve outcomes for the most vulnerable populations in Gaza.
